What is Media Literacy?
In today’s digital age, media is everywhere—on our phones, TVs, and in our children’s classrooms. As mothers, understanding media literacy is crucial to help guide our children through the overwhelming amount of information they encounter daily. For us moms, it means having the skills to help your family understand the messages they see online, on TV, in advertisements, and through social media.
In today’s digital world, children are constantly exposed to media, from YouTube videos to social media posts, and even online games. As a mom, media literacy empowers you to:
- Understand what your kids are watching and reading.
- Help them recognize misleading or harmful content.
- Encourage healthy digital habits and critical thinking.
- Protect them from online dangers such as scams, fake news, and cyberbullying.
I write about my awareness of media literacy in my book, Mothers for Boys Survival Guide, and I was probably more aware of it because of my background in broadcast television. After 25+ years of processing how it impacts my family, I encourage you to actively track and manage technology interactions from the beginning of your child’s development. As a mom, media literacy empowers you to:
-
- Protect Your Family:
Media can contain misinformation, unrealistic expectations, and even harmful messages. Knowing how to identify and discuss these issues with your children is essential to keeping them safe and informed. - Encourage Smart Decision-Making:
Teaching your children to think critically about what they see and hear helps them make better choices, whether it’s deciding what to believe or how to behave online. - Build Healthy Screen Time Habits:
With media literacy, you can set healthy limits on screen time and promote quality content that supports learning and well-being. - Strengthen Parent-Child Communication:
Talking about media openly helps build trust and encourages kids to come to you when they have questions or concerns about what they see online. - Take Action:
There are many tools to help you monitor and manage access to content on the internet, cell phones, and gaming devices. Here on the MOB site, we’ll share what’s effective and how to take action to protect your children.
- Protect Your Family:
How Can Moms Practice Media Literacy?
- Ask Questions: Encourage your kids to think critically by asking, “Who created this?” or “What message are they trying to send?”
- Stay Informed: Keep up with trends in social media, apps, and digital content to better understand what your children are experiencing.
- Model Good Behavior: Show your kids how to use media responsibly by setting an example.
- Use Reliable Sources: Teach your family to rely on credible sources for news and information.
By developing media literacy skills, you can guide your children to become smart, responsible, and thoughtful media consumers, ensuring their safety and well-being in today’s media-driven world.
